It is important to strengthen your home to prevent losses. Natural disasters can strike at any time, and when you live in Florida, certain disasters (such as hurricanes) are a fact of life. Homes that are not prepared to withstand these encounters with nature can suffer significant damage and expose your family to increased risk. Fortunately, there are measures you can take that will help to prepare your home to stand strong against disasters.

Strengthen Your Home: Roof Repair

Your roof can become a major cause of concern during a storm. This fact is especially true if there are defects in the roof you have not addressed. If you live in an area where major storms are likely, you should take care of any issues with shingles or the structure of your roof long before the storm season begins. You should also make sure that gutters and downspouts are clean and free of any debris that could obstruct the flow of water during heavy rain.

There are also a number of steps you can take to provide your roof with added strength. Options you should consider include reinforced trusses, adding steel or aluminum materials, and installing slate to combat the effects of heavy rains.

Foundation Repair

It is a good idea to check your foundation for signs of weakness a few months before storm season approaches. You can start by taking a quick walk around your home’s perimeter and checking for cracks or signs of stress in the concrete. Other indicators your foundation may need repairs include bowed walls, warped floors, and sagging ceilings.

Repairing a foundation requires specialized professional skills and shouldn’t be attempted by homeowners without experience. You can also ask your contractor about foundation-strengthening methods like underpinning your foundation and jacketing.

Strengthen Your Home: Secure Carports and Porches

High winds are a huge threat to carports, porches, and patios that are not safely secured. These structures can be ripped from your home and turned into dangerous projectiles. The holes left behind will also make your home more prone to flooding and further damage from the wind. These problems can be prevented by making sure the beams used to support any carport or porch around your home is securely planted into the ground.

Gulf Coast residents know all too well the damage that can be caused by nature. This damage can be much worse for families living in homes that are unprepared to withstand the high winds, heavy rains, and other natural weather events that come their way. The three measures above will add to the strength of your home and help your property withstand potential disasters caused by nature.
