If you have children, you know that raising them entails very different needs than those of a single couple. A home with children in it is liable to be more enjoyable if it has certain features. They might not be absolute necessities, but they certainly can feel that way. What does every family with kids actually need in a home?

What Every Family with Kids Needs in a Home: Backyard Space

Having a backyard space, especially during pandemic, can make a huge difference in the way a family interacts with the world. Children need to be able to explore and use curiosity, and an outdoor space helps with that immensely. Likewise, children need running spaces to play, places to roll, and daydreaming spots. Backyards are excellent for this, of course! Whether or not you have a designated play area, a tire swing, or other accouterments, having dirt under their fingernails is a great privilege of childhood and should be enjoyed.

Durable Features

If you have kids in a home, it will begin to show wear and tear after a while! Having sturdy options for daily life helps immensely. Wood laminate flooring is highly scratch and stain resistant, making it ideal for a home with children. Using high-quality paint with an eggshell finish that can easily be wiped down will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. High impact areas such as baseboards should have gloss paint. Things such as countertops should have finishes that will make it possible to use them for decades.

What Every Family with Kids Needs in a Home: Books

While you’re considering what to add to your new home, don’t forget bookcases to fill with adventures for children. If not bookcases, a designated reading chair with a library bag next to it! Filling a child with information from books is a spectacular way to develop empathy, help them to learn what their favorite skills are, and to, of course, learn new things. It helps when you’re reading to children, to have a space designated for it, made for comfort and is a winding down, peaceful oasis. Developing their education and intelligence while developing empathy is never a bad investment!

When you’re a family with children, your home is designed around children, and it needs to be able to survive children! Look towards sturdy furnishings and wall coverings, and floors which can withstand decades of use. Make your home child-friendly and it will be more friendly to children!
