Hurricanes are devastating. Widespread flooding, wind damage, falling trees, are just the start. But your real estate properties do not need to be damaged in the process. While not all storm damage is preventable, there are several steps you can take to ensure that your property is as safe as possible from potential storm damage.

Make Sure Your Home Holds Up During a Storm: Keep Up to Date on Maintenance

The reality is, storms don’t always cause new damage to parts of your home. They often simply make already compromised areas worse. If you are dealing with a leaky roof, you can bet a storm is going to exacerbate the problem. The same can be said of structural damage, and plumbing issues.

By keeping your home up to date on repairs and maintenance you are making sure your property is in the best shape to weather out a storm. Don’t skimp on taking care of your property before the storms come.

Landscape Your Property

This one may sound a little strange, why be too concerned about the landscaping during a storm? But there are quite a few landscaping approaches that will protect your property when a storm comes.

First, make sure you trim your tree branches. Falling tree branches are a major concern for your roof during a storm. Simply by keeping your trees properly trimmed you can save yourself time, money, and stress. You should also plant plenty of wind-breaking foliage, like evergreens, to absorb some of the wind strength before it reaches your property.

Make Sure Your Home Holds Up During a Storm: Chose High-Impact Windows

When it comes to hurricane hotbeds like Southwestern Florida, high-impact windows are basically a non-negotiable. If you purchase a property that doesn’t already have high-impact windows, that should be one of your first improvement priorities.

Installing high-impact windows can help minimize storm damage, and save you money on insurance premiums. Windows are some of the most vulnerable parts of a home in storms, and strengthening this weakness is essential to preventing storm damage

Storms are simply a part of life, and there is not a lot that can be done to prevent them. But that doesn’t mean storm damage has to be a pervasive reality of property ownership. By maintaining your home, landscaping properly, and installing high-impact windows in your home, you can mitigate or even eliminate most storm damage, and protect your property against the worst that nature can throw at you.
